What’s the right size for you?
Our technicians estimate the demand that will be put on air conditioning systems in homes or businesses. This is called the cooling load. In most homes, we’ll give this figure to you in BTUs (British Thermal Units) per hour. For most commercial applications, you’ll get an estimate of “tons” (12,000 BTU/hour = one ton.) This is why we offer discounts on 3, 4 and 5 ton commercial units. Cooling load is computed based on the square footage being cooled; shade; amount of glass in your home or commercial building; and ventilation.
Why do we pay so much attention to the correct size of air conditioning systems?
If your air conditioner is too small, it can’t keep your home or business cool. But if it is bigger than you need to meet the cooling load, it will cool in short blasts and then turn off. It is remarkably inefficient and draws far too much energy. These days, it pays to pay attention to the SEER rating
Air conditioning systems are given a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) specification. The higher the SEER, the more you may pay, but the less it will cost you to run. Units with the ENERGY STAR® designation qualify for home tax credits of up to $1500. The government mandates that new central air conditioner efficiency ratings are at least 13 SEER.
- What would be considered a lower efficiency air conditioning system today would have been considered high efficiency five or ten years ago. So if you are replacing an old model you can still cut air conditioning bills by up to half. A 13 to 14.5 SEER air conditioner may be the best overall value.
- High-efficiency air conditioners cost the most, but result in the lowest energy bills. This is a long-term investment in cutting electricity costs and meeting the needs of Arizona’s long cooling season. Many are called “two stage” air conditioning systems. They keep cool air circulating almost all of the time. Rooms don’t heat up as they will during the off cycle of single stage units.
